Any day I can visit the Savory Spice Shop is a good day. I have been known to invent errands that take me to their street, simply to have an excuse to stop in. A small, close cluttered little shop bursting at the seams with seemingly endless varieties of cinnamon, pepper, herbs and seasonings, Savory is a sensory experience unequaled in Denver.
I had read about Savory in the newspaper, and decided to take a field trip to see what it was all about. What a great surprise! The smell of freshly ground cinnamon greeted me as soon as I got out of the car, leading me to the spicy wonderland that was inside. The walls are lined with jars full of spices from around the world, dried herbs, custom mixed seasonings, cocoa powders and at least a dozen kinds of salt. Spices can be purchased in as little as a 1/8th of an ounce and are amazingly inexpensive. I found about 12 things that I couldn't live without and rushed home to bake something and throw my old spices from the grocery store away. (Who knew that there was a better option than the canned dill weed I had owned for at least 8 years?)
The best part of the Savory experience is the staff there. Full of hints and recipes, they are a fountain of knowledge about what they sell. Whatever new dish I am trying, they are always able to recommend the perfect thing to enhance it and they are always ready with new flavors and ideas that I would have never thought of. Savory is also a fabulous place to find a gift for your favorite food lover or cook. Gift boxes abound for Steak Lovers, Bakers and Barbecuers, all overflowing with a mix of spices and seasonings, artfully packaged with sticks of cinnamon and pieces of star anise. If you are in Denver, visit them at 1537 Platte Street, or they are on the web at Savory. I'm a better cook for having found them!
